The evidence:
1) Avatar. So I enjoyed watching Avatar, the graphics were good, better than what we had seen before, but then there's the plot. That horrible, horrible plot. There are plenty of movies with bad plots (well actually I think there are a handful with that same awful storyline), but what made this movie different is that they justified its writing with the graphics. How can a movie with so little substance and really just some Orientalist/generally problematic themes win so many awards and sell so may tickets? That's exactly what's troublesome, is that 3D is causing some films to sacrifice overall quality for visual thrills.
2) Capitalism. Yeah, I said it. A ticket to a 3D movie cost more so naturally movie theaters are going to try and bring in more 3D films because they can gross more per movie than they may normally be able to. Maybe that's harmless enough, but coupled with the fact that Hollywood is going to have to provide more movies to fill the greedy needs of theaters, then they might pass on potentially great films in favor of what'll bring in the dough. Let's just say that we can expect to see more and more 3D movies shown on our screens, which of course means less of the 'boring' 2D stuff.
3) The Black and White Film. It's possible that once audiences become more accustomed to literally being more fully immersed in the film they may start to view our HD or even just film movies as low quality things of the past, even it does mean that they have to sport those silly glasses. Of course there may be those who are always going to be more "artsy," but the majority of people these days don't like watching movies in black and white and there's a strong possibility that the same might happen with the 2D medium in general.
4) Lights, Camera, ACTION! It's not surprise that 3D requires a certain type of movie because no one is going to want to watch Coffee and Cigarettes... in 3D! No, you need action, adventure, cheap things popping out at the audience sorts of tricks. If 3D becomes more popular and we need more of this type of movie, then there may be a homogenization of the industry.
Who knows though? I'm not going to lie, seeing movies in 3D is fun! I just don't want to see it take over the industry and replace everything we've come to love about movies; where you can watch people in ordinary situations and gain so much more insight than you normally could.
Cheers to progress!
love your analysis of the whole 3D trend... Myself I'm not a big fan of the 3D hype, but I do feel it's getting better, especially in animated films that are produced that way to begin with and the effect is not add as an after thought (except Avatar that was shot that way. perhaps it is just the next part of film evolution, and maybe the fact i get an headache from it is since the medium itself is still suffering from some growing pains. but I guess we'll see. for now 2D work just fine for me :)
